When Gabrielle “Bree” Valentine awoke in a hospital bed with a newborn baby, she centered herself and rebuilt. Five years later, on a weekend in the Hamptons, a chance encounter with a man unlike any other jars her—bone deep. Daniel Hawthorne Baird II, wealthy, dangerous, British aristocrat, gravitates to Bree like caviar on crostini. In his relentless obsession with Bree, their lives entwine despite Bree’s resistance. EXCERPT:

“Daniel!” she called out, waving her hand in the air, flagging someone down. Within seconds, there stood Mr. V-neck himself—Danny—flanked by two other dark-haired men. He was dressed more casually than the other men, who wore full suits and ties. He looked like he hadn’t gotten much sleep, and I noticed for the first time his hair color was a rich, beer bottle brown.

I smiled warmly in greeting, but his face was stony and he turned away. I guess Danny and I weren’t friends when others were around.

“Join me, gentlemen,” blonde bob implored. She was English too and clearly knew how to play her role here. I realized then she was the other half of the V-neck Crew from the lobby—Danny’s other half. As she waved her hand, I also noticed the giant sparkling canary yellow diamond on her hand.

Danny’s nod was a directive; the two men filled the chairs between us as he sat at the end, the blonde at his side. As the men took to discussing financials, I picked up they were all English. I was not impressed when they placed special orders to the kitchen, apparently too good to plate their own food or eat what the rest of us did.

“Bree!” I heard and turned at the sound of charging footsteps. I spun just in time to see little Amy barrel into my chair, giggling. Everyone had turned towards the disruption, eyeing her disapprovingly. Well, except Danny, whose eyes were closed and his brows were knitted together as if he’d just been poked with a needle. She wedged herself between the snobby suit guy, bumping his elbow, and fired away.

“Did you know my mom wears a wig sometimes?” she announced, panting heavily from her run. I laughed inappropriately loud before covering my mouth. She took that as encouragement.

“And sometimes, at night, I hear her in her bedroom shaving her legs all by herself. Buzzz, buzzz, buzzz, allll night. That’s what it sounds like. Yep,” she mimed while nodding, smiling brightly. I was wide-eyed as I surveyed the table. The blonde was aghast, as was the suit directly opposite her, but the guy to my side was laughing and Danny observed her as though she were a curiosity.

“Little one, I don’t know if I’d share that with anyone else today, okay?” I suggested amusedly as a pulled a stray hair from her face.

“She won’t care,” Amy shrugged.

“Let’s keep it our little secret, anyway,” I whispered. “Cool,” she whispered back, liking the idea of a secret.

“What’s your name, little girl?” the suit next to me asked. “Amy.”

“Amy, I’d like you to give your mother my card. Tell her it’s in case she needs any help shaving tonight,” he said smugly, flicking out his hand. She snatched the card. I hoped he was kidding when I saw the wedding band on his finger.

“Okay! You two can come play with me now if you want!” she exclaimed to myself and Suit One, bouncing on her heels. I wondered if her mother had fed her bars of chocolate to placate her. Or possibly uppers.

Her eyes bounced back and forth from the suited man and me expectantly, he raised an eyebrow that said ‘how preposterous’, and I took a cue; even his eyebrow seemed to have a snooty English accent.

“Amy, I think the nice man has business to do, but maybe I’ll come and play later.”

“I’ll be on the hill.” She pointed beyond the pool down to the sloping grassy hills beyond and then she bolted for it. I snickered, observing her stumble once, her legs not fast enough for her body.

I checked my watch, wondering where August could be. As I did, the overcast sky parted for just a brief moment, a few beams of sunlight rebelliously breaking through the gray and lavender clouds, the rays falling like tiny radiant spotlights and in the corner of my eye, I caught a glimmer of cognac—just like a spark—and an errant thought raced through my mind, too quickly to catch.

I felt suddenly tense, like I needed some air; air somewhere else. I rose from the stuffy table and smoothed out my shirt, and by the time I looked up, Danny had risen from his chair; the other men abruptly followed suit. I was puzzled by the gesture but I snapped out of my daze, my inner tension returning, when the blonde grabbed his forearm and gave him a look like he’d just stood for the maid.

I turned, heading for the hill where Amy played and stood watching from the edge of the patio, trying to clear my head. Several children were chasing each other and I smiled, thinking of my son, but somehow I still felt…troubled.

Nell E. S. Douglas has possessed a deep, abiding love for written words since childhood. The transition from reader, to writer, was a natural one. Following college in Florida, Nell exited the world of pure imagination, and entered the one of business, successfully establishing a career in sales, and developing a cup-a-day habit (of coffee). Today, Nell writes everything from story ideas to essays during the spaces in-between domestic goddessing, and contributing as a managing partner to a thriving small business. Nell resides in Florida, with her husband and their children, passing on the traditions of her mother, and sinking her feet in the sand whenever possible.

Her favorite books are Pride and Prejudice, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Her favorite movies are Gladiator, anything by Scorcese, The Time Traveller’s Wife, and Bridesmaids.

 HARD TRIGGER Excerpt

I take a long sip of my drink, the flavor of olives and alcohol saturating my mouth. “How’d you do in there?”

“Not even close to as impressively as you.” He shakes his head, as if we’ve just finished a friendly one-on-one game on my balcony.

The bartender slides a tumbler brimming with brown juice towards him. I press Max Bet, and hold two Queens. “You know what they say about losing propositions.” I land a full house, and suck on my cigarette. Diego notices. “Get out before you get killed.” I tilt my chin up to exhale away from his broad torso, moving in closer as he leans an elbow on the bar. The current between us surges.

He swirls the ice in his glass before downing most of the whiskey. “Unless the risk is worth the reward,” he says placing his near-empty glass on the bar. “Like winning a $150,000 pot…on a bluff.” He stares at the cut over my brow. “Jujitsu?”

I nod, gulping down more alcohol, watching his jaw flex from youth and an overabundance of testosterone. “Are you looking for pointers?”

“I want to apologize.” One of his large, well-manicured hands takes the cigarette from between my fingers. He inhales deeply, glancing briefly at my empty ring finger.

He’d accused my step-father of purposely calling me to break up our trip, and worse, that my working for him was the reason that my mother had ended up in the hospital.

I finish my drink and push it out of my way. It’s the only thing I can do to calm my nerves. I stand, and in my heels, we’re nearly at eye level. “My mother is out of the hospital. Thank you.” I place a fifty on the bar and press the Cash Out button. “But it doesn’t change anything between us.” I slip the paper worth a couple hundred extra now into my clutch, sidling up next to him, “So fucking hot, aren’t you?” My bare shoulder brushes against his jacket, and my cheek gets flush the closer it inches towards his. “But let me be clear.” My lips brush his ear. “I’m not interested.”

I let that sink in before pouting like I’m about to blow him a kiss and strutting away, even though I know his eyes are still on me.

“Hey,” he calls out, but I don’t bother turning around. Diego and I…we’re better at being friends. I shouldn’t have given him false hope.

But he’s keeping pace. “Hey,” he says, firmly grabbing my arm.

My fist whips up. Reflex. I nearly clock him. And he let’s go, putting some distance between us. “I know you like to play rough, Victoria. But I also know you’re trying to kill my uncle.”

I grind to a halt. My heart thumps loudly in my chest.

“Interested now?” Diego places his hand back on my arm and walks me towards a set of elevators.

If your looking for a truly astounding read this summer. Then you must pick up a copy of Broken Promise a romantic thriller by Tara Thomas.

I had the pleasure of reading this book and like the other books in the Sons of Broad series this book did not fail to entertain. Though I would recommend reading the books in order of publication. Broken Promise was very intense.

It carried a steady pace throughout the course of the book. I don’t know what book in the series I enjoyed more, though Broken Promise would have to top the list.

Which make this entire series a keeper. With fantastic character building and a flawless plot. Broken Promise was one of my summer guilty pleasures.

For what is worth Cowboy, Cross My Heart, written by Donna Grant published under the St. Martin’s Paperbacks brand, was an okay book. When Naomi Pierce returns to her Texas hometown it wasn’t what she expected. She, sure enough, didn’t expect to come home to find that her best friend, Whitney was being. When Brice helps saves Naomi & Whitney from an attacked. Naomi and Brice are now on someones hit list.

The plot was intriguing and intense. It kept my interest until the turning of the last page. The romance was mild compared to some of Donna Grant’s other books. If you love contemporary romance with suspense then Donna Grant’s Cowboy, Cross My Heart should be added to your list of books to read.

sc-synopsis

New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant takes you deep inside the Texas rodeo scene in the second book in her Heart of Texas series, Cowboy, Cross My Heart, where danger and desire ride side by side. . .

Naomi Pierce isn’t the type to let a cowboy sweep her off feet. It’s not her first rodeo, after all. But when she returns to her Texas hometown, she can’t help but be swept up again in the rough-and-tumble world of hard-riding, bronco-busting good-ol’-boys she loved as a girl. She might be here to photograph her Rodeo Queen best friend. But it’s one fine-looking cowboy who really captures her eye…

Brice Harper is all man, all muscle, and all heart. From the moment he rides into the stadium, he can’t help but notice the beautiful stranger with a camera watching him from the stands. It doesn’t take a zoom lens to see the sparks of instant attraction. But things really heat up when he meets Naomi up-close—and he discovers that someone is stalking her friend. Brice wouldn’t be any kind of cowboy if he didn’t offer to help the ladies out. But can the rough rider keep this spirited shutterbug out of danger—without risking his heart?

DEEP COVER Excerpt

Copyright © 2018 Scarlett Cole

Cabe.

Amy’s stomach dropped, and her head spun. Despite everything, her heart betrayed her and skipped a beat at the sight of him. It was understandable. Her memory of him had not even begun to do him justice. He wore a navy blue suit tailored to his swimmer’s frame. The jacket hung open, fitting snuggly over his wide shoulders. A pale blue shirt stretched perfectly across his trim torso. She’d bet dollars to donuts that there was one of those hugely attractive six-packs beneath the soft-looking cotton.

She watched him greet one of the analysts assigned to the project, his back now to her. Damn, that butt.

Which she shouldn’t be studying. Because the guy was a jerk. There was no other word for him.

He was joined by the men she’d seen him sitting with in the bar. One was tall, like a Nordic Viking. The other one was equally built, with chestnut hair and a broad grin. They had an easy confidence. It irked her.

Cunningham had joined Cabe and was shaking his hand. Her stomach sank even further as she realized what he was about to do. Yup, there it was. He lifted his hand in her direction, and Cabe’s eyes met hers.

No freaking response. Wow.

Nothing.

A body-language expert would get absolutely zero from him.

No telltale lines of concern between his brows, no curl of a smile in recognition. No Oh my god I am so freaking sorry for being a jerk and leaving you standing alone at the bar in front of a room full of people.

As hard as she focused on keeping her gaze equally neutral, she knew she was failing. If her cheeks felt hot—and by her guess were likely a little pinker than normal—there was nothing she could do to control it. Her breathing was a little more erratic than normal. But she took a deep breath as Cabe walked toward her.

“Cabe Moss,” he said calmly, offering her his hand. “Eagle Securities.” His tone was even, not a hint of recognition. Had she been that bland, that uninteresting that he couldn’t even remember her? Amy tried to clear the thought. If he truly didn’t remember her, it was a good thing. It would make working with him even easier.

“Agent Amy Murray.” She reached for his hand, and memories of shaking it in the bar crashed through her. It was just as warm as she’d remembered, and large, his handshake firm and confident.

Not even a freaking blink from him. Or a wink. Or an extra squeeze of the hand. No, he just let go of her hand after a completely appropriate length of time.

Goddamn.

KNIGHTS OF SIN by Erin Trejo

Never Letting Go
Knights of Sin MC Book 1
by Erin Trejo
Genre: MC Romantic Suspense
MICAH:
Ten years ago I fucked up. I pushed the one thing I loved the most away.
I watched her run as far as she could. I ruined the love we had. I
threw myself into the Marine’s thinking I could get her out of my
system. That didn’t work.
When I came back I got the worst news ever. Or so I thought. Now I’m
forced to keep a promise I made and find the one girl that stole my heart.
AUBRIE:
We had a love that was stronger than it should have been. He threw it
away though. After a series of unfortunate events, I was settled and stable.
Happy?
Not quiet but when Micah shows up and rocks my world to the core I’m
forced back into my old life. A life I ran from. Now being back in
the one place I used to call home, I don’t know where I belong.
Learning To Love
Knights of Sin MC Book 2
Bullet:
I fought my way through life. Family was an important part of that. I
kept myself away from them not wanting to see the disgust of my
father. My club was all the family I needed. When I was taken and
forced into a living hell, the one thing that kept me going was the
unknown girl next to me. Getting her out alive was my priority. After
I do, I have to make the toughest decision of my life.
Trinity:
I was never wanted. My father used me to his advantage. I was taken
for his debts. I thought I would die. I wanted to. That faceless man
that kept me going was all I looked forward to. Until he was gone.
When he finds me again, I have to learn to love. Can he be the one to
show me how?
Fighting For a Chance
Knights of Sin MC Book 3
Dax:
I was a fighter. I was good at it. When I met Laura I thought I was
having a round of hot sex like usual. When I saw her for who she
truly was, I wanted more. A lot more. She had her own problems but I
wasn’t ready to let go just yet. I’ll fight for what I want even if
she does push me away.
Laura:
I have a past that won’t go away. Literally. Hector hasn’t gotten the
message that I don’t want him. A night with Dax turns into more. I
didn’t plan on it. Every single time I turned around, he was there
and I found myself liking it. But Hector remains a problem. A problem
that quickly gets out of hand.
Keeping Faith
Knights of Sin MC Book 4
Kane:
Unhappily married. Yeah, that sums up my life. I messed up with that
shit decision. I still have my sister though. When I attend her
wedding, I run into an old friend. Ivy. When she admits that she had
feelings for me, I take her home like any good man would do. I didn’t
expect all the complications that came with it though. She was used
before me and I want to show her that I’m not the same as him. The
problem is, I am.
Ivy:
I fought cancer and won. I fought a useless husband and won. When I
see Kane again, I lose. Badly. I always had a crush on him when we
were kids. I never thought the feelings would still be there years
later. One night with him and my world is thrown off balance. His
club is his life and I know that. When my cancer comes back in full
force, I do the one thing I can. I run. He will chase me. He told me
he would. When the tables turn, will I do the same?
One More Try
Knights of Sin MC Book 5
Sebastian
Blood. Death. Darkness. Those are things I know. Fucking. Drinking. Walking
away. I was good at that. I messed up one night when I slept with the
President’s niece. We were both drunk and out of control. Now she’s
pregnant with my kid. I can’t be a father. I don’t want to be. At
least not at first. After a hit goes wrong, I change my mind.
Shannon
I was taken. I was beaten. I was raped. My uncle’s club saved me. It
also destroyed me. Meeting Bash was the worst thing that could have
happened. He was a mistake and we both knew it. The more I tried to
stay away from him, the more he sought me out. My attraction to him
became something more. Now where do we go?
Promise of Love
Knights of Sin MC Book 6
Link:
I was a virgin. Yeah, the laugh of the club. It didn’t bother me
though. I saw the way my parent’s and I didn’t want to be like that.
I love this club. I’d do anything for them. When I met Jordyn, that
loyalty was tested. The things that happened between us quickly
defined us. I’ve held out hope that love was out there for me.
Jordyn:
I ran from one bad situation to another. When the club I fell into
sent me to another to get information, I thought it would be easy. I
didn’t think I’d fall for the man I was supposed to be spying on. Not
wanting to hurt him, I ran. He found me. Now I have to face the music
and the man I’ve fallen for.
I am a wife, mother, child chauffeur and author. I love being able to
create different characters and spin a web that makes them come
together in the end. My books do not stick to just one genre, they
span many.
I write about things that are real life situations and fairy tales are
not always smooth sailing. My MC books are hard and gritty and they
have struggles just like you would in life.
I also have books that are not so in your face. There are several that
are good love stories that are fraught with issues that the
characters have to deal with.

Review

What would you do if you couldn’t remember anything from your past? In Shannon McKenna’s latest book in her Obsidian File series, we will learn how Luke handles not knowing.

In My Skin, was interesting and S.M. got the book started with intrigue. When Dani LaSalle woke she thought her day would be a normal one. However, that wasn’t to be. A friend from her past lie injured on her doorstep. From there In My Skin have you drawn in with the arrival and introduction of Luke the mystery man who claims to have known her friend and now bound to protect her from the people who may have caused her long-lost friend his life.

What I personally enjoyed about this book, was the action and the chemistry between the two main characters. This book had non-stop action and suspense. I was nice to catch up on the old memorable characters.  There wasn’t any part of the story that I didn’t find entertaining, I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series. I will certainly recommend this book to any die-hard romantic suspense readers.

EXCERPT:

“You might not know all the details of my career, all the places I’ve traveled, or even what I’ve been hoping for in the future. But what you do know is far more important than any of that.”

“And what is it I know?” she asked dubiously.

Lifting her hand, I pressed her palm against my chest. Her fingers were cool compared to my skin. Her hand was small compared to mine when I covered hers completely, pressing it flat over my heart. “You know places inside my heart no one else has ever encountered. You know how hard it is to breathe when we look into each other’s eyes. And I’m betting you feel a gentle tug right about here”—I poked my finger into the center of her chest—“when I walk into a room.”

Her eyes scoured mine. “You feel that, too?”

“Ah, sweetheart, I definitely feel it, too.”

Our foreheads met, and we both smiled.

Too soon, Bells pulled back, her brow knitting. “It doesn’t make sense that I could love you so very much and not know the details.”

“You think knowing my favorite color or the state of my teeth means you love me more?”

“Your favorite color is blue,” she said, mildly affronted.

“‘Cause that’s the color of your eyes.” I kissed the tip of her nose.

“I want the details, Liam. I want everything about you.”

“You already have the most important parts, Bells.”

A stubborn glint came into her eyes, and I chuckled. “If everything is what you want, then everything is what you’ll get.”

Lei couldn’t breathe. Her chest closed painfully as if she’d been knocked flat on her back, and her lungs burned with the need for oxygen. Somewhere in the tiny rational corner of her mind, she knew there was nothing really wrong with her, but rational thought had no place in the midst of her panic.

He’s back. Emma was right all along and he’s coming for us.

Stop.

You’re spiraling.

Travis Berkley is still in jail. This is a copycat, and no matter how bad a copycat is, he can’t be worse than Travis. You survived before. You will this time, too.

A whine cut through her thoughts, and then Saul was there, nudging her hand with his cool nose. She inhaled sharply, suddenly aware that everyone in the room was staring at her. The Feds had the blank-slate expression she’d come to associate with cops when they were in a difficult situation. Emma looked at her as if she was on the verge of her own panic attack.

Lei stroked her hand over Saul’s head, forming a wall of indisputable facts in her mind to keep the fear at bay. She wasn’t twenty-one anymore, only a couple of years out of the stifling family home she’d grown up on, still drunk on freedom and the realization that she could do anything she wanted to with her future.

She’d been an idiot. A child who was playing dress-up without realizing the pitfalls of adulthood.

Though most pitfalls don’t come attached to a knife.

Lei wasn’t that girl anymore. She’d seen the worst Travis Berkley could offer and had the scars to show for it. She could shoot. She could fight. She’d worked with enough cops over the course of her career as a trainer and search team that she had an inside view to how their minds worked.

She would not lose herself to terror.

Another stroke to Saul’s head and she was able to speak. “How close to the original murders are the details?”

Agent Young exchanged a glance with his partner and leaned forward, bracing his elbows on his knees. His big hands dangled between his legs, and she distantly noted that he had really firm thighs beneath the expensive slacks. He spoke slowly, as if gauging her response. “We haven’t had a chance to check the original case files, but the big details are almost identical. The murders were performed in the same way—girls kept in a main room and taken out individually. We think he snuck in through a window, because their condo was on the second floor and he used a knife from the kitchen.”

She could almost hear Travis’s voice in her head, even after all these years. Let me in, Lei-Lei. I have a surprise for you. Stupid. She’d been so incredibly stupid, swayed by a pretty face and a boy her parents would approve of who made her feel. Smart, athletic, the right dollar amount in his family’s bank account. Someone bright and colorful and checking all the right boxes.

Since she couldn’t bring herself to ask if one of the girls let him in, she focused on the rest. “If this is a fan, he must have been in contact with Travis at some point.” She put her hand on Emma’s leg when her friend flinched at his name. The Feds didn’t react, which made her sigh. “But you already knew that. You don’t need me telling you how to do your job. What is it you need?”

Another loaded look between them. They’d obviously been partners for a long time, because they managed to convey an entire conversation’s worth of talking in a single look.

Again, it was Agent Young who took the lead. “We can find the details of the case easily enough, along with your accounts, but what I’d like to know is your take on Travis.”

“Because I dated him.” She stated it baldly, as if the fact she’d slept with a murderer was something she’d dealt with and moved on from. As if the fact didn’t still keep her up at night, moving beneath her skin until she wanted to take a wire brush to her body. There weren’t enough hot showers and bleach baths in the world to change the fact she’d willingly been with him. She could never take that back.

“Because you—both of you—have known him longer than anyone.”

“Agent Young—”

“Dante.”

She stopped short. Dante. It fit him somehow—strong and a little bit intense. He masked it well, but there was fire lurking in the depths of his dark eyes, in the way he clenched his fists as they spoke about Travis. She shouldn’t be forming personal opinions about any man, let alone one connected with the case. Lei’s track record had more than proven that fact.

While she was still trying to process her strange and seriously inconvenient reaction to him, Emma had found her voice. She spoke softly, her southern accent giving her breathy tone a pretty lilt. She had a Dolly Parton thing going for her—at least before Dolly got a little crazy for plastic surgery—and Emma wasn’t above playing up the sweet-southern-belle thing when it suited her. “Travis Berkley is a sociopath with a healthy dose of narcissistic personality disorder—which you already know because you read the file. Everything is in the file. We have been doing our best to get past what he did to us—to our sisters—and that means forgetting as much as possible.”

Maybe for Emma. Lei couldn’t afford to forget. It had been her mistake that tipped the first domino that destroyed so many lives. While it was possible Travis could have gotten into the house on his own, she’d been the fool who let him in her window.

The knowledge made her hands shake. Emma might want to do everything to avoid that gory walk down memory lane, but Lei didn’t have that option. Guilt wrapped around her throat, tightening, ever tightening. “You have something specific you’re here for.”

Agent Rowan leaned forward, a clear indication that she’d take it from there. As much as Lei wanted the calming force Dante—Agent Young—seemed to emanate, she turned almost gratefully to the redhead. She eyed her as if Lei was a particularly interesting bug. “We’re theorizing this fucker—”

“Clarke.”

She didn’t look at him. “These women have seen enough, Dante. You know as well as I do that a few choice curse words aren’t going to have them scrambling for their sniffing salts.”

Lei understood now why Britton had paired these two together. Clarke was the blunt force designed to set a person back on their heels so they were too busy reacting to her foul mouth to stop and think that there might be a shrewd mind behind those deceptively big blue eyes. Dante on the other hand, was a cool summer mist, unruffling feathers and putting everyone in the room at ease with his calm presence. Both agents would be underestimated in different ways, which was only to their benefit.

Clever.

She eyed the dogs on the floor. Neither of them seemed overly concerned with the Feds in the room. Good. Lei had more than proven she could be fooled, but Saul couldn’t. Every time he reacted poorly to a person, she paid attention—and most of the time something eventually came to light to prove her dog’s instincts correct.

Clarke followed her gaze and then refocused on Lei and then Emma. “A lot of sociopaths think they’re smarter than everyone else in the room—some of them are even right—and Travis sure as hell falls into the latter category. His IQ is 167, and from all accounts, prison hasn’t broken him. What we need to know is if he’d encourage a fan to take these steps.”

“Of course he would. He’s a fucking psycho,” Emma snarled.

“What do you think?” Clarke was looking at Lei.

Because why not? Even now, cops thought Lei had some kind of inside track to the way Travis’s mind worked. She’d dated him for months, had slept with him countless times, and so she must have some insider knowledge to explain how the golden boy went so very, very wrong.

She hadn’t been able to give them a satisfactory answer then. She didn’t have one now, either. But she could try.

ca- guest postQ: What inspired you to write this book?

A: When I wrote the second book in the series The Ghosts of a Centaur, I introduced everyone to Nathaniel. It was during the time that I was finishing up that book that it hit me that Nathaniel needed his own story. He had been through so much tragedy in his short life that I wanted him to have his happily-ever-after.
Q: If you had to do it over again would you change anything about your latest book?
A: To be honest so much got changed during the editing phase for The Making of a Centaur. While I liked some of what I did before the editing, the story is so much better now. So, no I wouldn’t change anything about this book. In fact, I wouldn’t change anything about any of the books in this series.
Q: How did you come up with the title for your books?

A: I went with the Centaur Agency as the overall series as a play on words. With the agents being undercover and hiding under the cover of either working on a horse ranch or for the equine magazine, they are half and half in my line of thinking so Centaur fit.  Part of me slightly regrets this because sometimes readers expect it to be a fantasy type story when it isn’t. But the regret is only slight because I still love the name.
Q: What is your favorite part of this book?

A: My favorite part is the killer scenes. This same killer moves from book to book. That is why this series is not a standalone. The fun comes from having readers trying to guess the killer’s identity. His identity will be revealed in the next book which is the last book in the series. I have also decided to play a game on my Facebook page prior to book 4 publishing. I am going to allow readers to guess the identity of the killer for a chance to win prizes.

I am a wife and mother, who lives in a small Southeast Missouri town. I
am the author of the Centaur Agency series. Currently I am working on
book 3 in the series The Making of a Centaur which will publish in
July 2017. I also have plans for a vampire trilogy that I am working
on. I will be publishing the trilogy after I finish the 4 book
Centaur Agency series. From there I also am working on a Werewolf
series. So much planned with a little bit for everyone.

The Surviving Girls Excerpt

Watching the women interact was fascinating on a level Dante wasn’t prepared for. He’d known Lei and Emma lived together, but he hadn’t had the opportunity to take a step back and consider the implications of that arrangement. Emma teetered on the edge of a breakdown and used Lei to pull herself back from the ledge . . . everything made a lot more sense.

They’d formed a symbiotic relationship, of sorts.

There wasn’t much data concerning situations like this one, mostly because they rarely arose, and each case was too individual to tie together in nice, easy studies. It stood to reason, though, that coming out of that sorority house as the only two survivors would send these women into one of two futures. In one, they never saw each other and pretended the other didn’t exist rather than be faced with the perpetual reminder of what they’d gone through.

In the other, they realized that no one would ever know what they went through as intimately as the other person who survived—and leaned on each other as result.

Lei was the one who finally met his gaze, and hell if her inky-dark eyes didn’t take his breath away despite the circumstances. Clarke had pulled both women’s photos on the way over there, but they were old—from their sorority days. Both beautiful in their own way, though they were a study in opposites. Emma had the sweet southern thing going for her, all blonde hair, big innocent blue eyes, and curves that suggested southern cooking. He couldn’t tell if her soft tone was practiced or natural, but it pricked at him every time she spoke.

Lei . . . She was something else altogether. She was petite in a way that should have read frail but reminded him of a blade waiting to be unsheathed. There were muscles beneath her light-brown skin, and he guessed that she’d have no problem keeping up with the monster dog at her feet during a search. Her straight black hair was pulled back into a no-nonsense ponytail, which left her features in stark relief. Beautiful, but doesn’t like to draw attention to it. Might as well have tried to hide the sky.

Fuck, get it together. You’re here to interview them, not to lose your damn mind over Lei Zhang.

Yes, she was beautiful, but he’d dealt with beautiful women before without jeopardizing his professional persona. Dante didn’t know what it was about this woman that called to something in him, but he had to shelve it.

He couldn’t afford to be distracted.

She clasped Emma’s hand but turned her body to face him more fully. “The night of the murders, I let Travis Berkley into the Omega Delta Lambda house. We’d been dating four months and he told me he had a surprise.” Her lips twisted. “It was against the rules, but girls broke the rules all the time.”

He noted her knuckles whitening where she held Emma’s hand, but her voice maintained its steady tone. “We had sex. Approximately an hour later, something changed. I still have problems putting it into words. Travis just . . . shifted. It was like he’d taken off a mask and I didn’t recognize the man beneath. He hit me. A few times.” She absentmindedly touched the little hooked scar on her cheekbone. From Travis’s ring. “I passed out. When I woke up, he’d barricaded my door shut and I could hear their screams.”

Lei’s breath hitched, and it was almost as if she inhaled and Emma exhaled. The blonde lifted her chin. “I was in the basement studying when it started. Finals were coming up, and I was struggling in history and needed the extra study time. The first sign of something wrong was Travis hauling Sarah—” She cut herself off and flinched. “I’m sorry. It’s hard to say their names, even now.”

Clarke huffed out a breath. “You don’t have to name every single girl he killed. We know their names. We know their stories. We just want to hear how it all went down from your perspective.”

They wouldn’t find anything new here. Dante knew it, and he suspected Clarke knew it, too. These two women had told their stories countless times over the years, and if there was information they hadn’t shared before now, he highly doubted this would be the time it’d magically come out.

Hearing the story through their own voices was a whole hell of a lot more jarring than reading it in the file, however.

Emma took them through it. How Travis Berkley brought the entire house of girls into that basement, how he was charming and terrifying and told them that he’d let them go one by one . . . if they did exactly as he asked. It wasn’t until the night was over and no one had come to save them that the remaining girls realized what was happening, and even then, they were too afraid to try to overpower him.

Herd mentality. Travis had to have known he could manipulate the whole group as long as he got them scared and in a single place. They believed the pretty lie because the truth was impossible to wrap their minds around.

Emma’s voice shook. “There were still . . . ten of us left when I realized I wasn’t getting out of that house alive—that none of the girls had gotten out alive like he’d promised. When he took the next girl, I hid under the couch.”

“None of those girls saw you hide?” Clarke frowned. “I find that hard to believe.”

“I don’t know. I don’t . . .” She dropped her gaze as if she couldn’t bear to hold her head up any longer. “We were in shock at that point—just sitting there, lost in ourselves. We didn’t talk. We didn’t even look at each other. We just sat there and . . . contemplated the fact we were going to die. I don’t know if they even noticed I was gone. I hid until every single one of them was gone. And he just . . . walked out.”

“He came for me. I guess it was then.” Lei didn’t shrink in on herself. She seemed to grow taller, sit straighter. “I heard him removing the barricade and I panicked. After listening to that all night . . .” She shook her head. “I knew what would happen if he got back into my room, so I climbed out the window.”

Clarke went still. “I saw the list of your injuries. You had a broken arm, your knee was so fucking swollen you shouldn’t have been able to walk, and you had several head wounds and a handful of broken ribs on top of that. How the hell did you climb out a window?”

Lei shrugged on shoulder. “He would kill me if I didn’t. I figured falling to my death was preferable to letting Travis have me, so I took my chances.”

It was only sheer dumb luck that it was late enough in the morning that a student jogging past saw Lei. By the time he’d come back with help, Lei was unconscious in the flower bed and Travis was gone.

Dante sat back, going over the story again in his head. As he suspected, there was no new information, but they’d have been remiss if they didn’t go over it one more time. He exchanged a look with Clarke. The killings in Seattle held some key differences. He didn’t think any of the girls had willingly let the unsub in, and he had carved his message into their bodies when he was through.

A message that might or might not have been meant for Travis Berkley. Hard to believe that someone who’d gone through the trouble of researching the murders would get the killer’s name wrong, but the alternative was that the girls’ deaths were meant as tribute to someone else. Both possibilities stretched the realm of belief and didn’t make a damn bit of sense.

The tension in the room grew like it was a living thing, coiling and snapping between the four of them. Once Dante and Clarke left, things would move quickly. They had to talk to Berkley. They had to head back to Seattle to go over things again with Detective Smith and the ME. They had to track down this bastard before he continued with whatever plan he’d begun with those girls’ deaths.

Dante, at least, would have the comfort of motion to keep him distracted from the scenes that he’d witnessed. Lei and Emma wouldn’t have even that. He leaned forward, catching Lei’s attention. “We can assign a protection detail. I don’t think you’re in any immediate danger, but if it would help ease your mind, I’ll make some calls.”

Lei’s lips quirked up at the edges, but the smile never came close to reaching her eyes. “Dante—Agent Young—we were in immediate danger the second that asshole singled Travis out as someone he wanted to emulate. We’re more than capable of taking care of ourselves.”

EXCERPT:

You know the moment you can feel someone standing behind you? Like you can sense their energy? Multiply that by about a thousand, and that’s what this feels like.

I turn to see who’s in my personal space, expecting it to be some drunk idiot, but it’s not.

Holy crap.

It’s a guy who looks exactly like Jared Bryan… the playboy country singer Stella represents – fair skin, eyes so blue they can’t be real. I’ve never met him in person; he’s never come to the Atlanta office. But I’ve seen numerous pictures, and this guy’s dark hair is a little longer than Jared’s. And he seems… taller than I imagined Jared to be. Leaner. Not skinny, but lean in a cut way. In a really tasty way.

He could quite possibly be a hotter version of the singer himself. And apparently he knows it.

He smirks at me as I study him.

I shake my head. Get it together.

“Jared Bryan,” he says, extending his hand for a shake.

I laugh. “Right.” What a douchebag. Going around pretending to be him.

He cocks his gorgeous head. Gives me a ‘you don’t believe me?’ look.

“Okay, Jared,” I say, mocking him, and then shoo him away with my free hand. “Go use this one-man sideshow on someone else.” I’m not buying it. Last I heard, the real Jared was in Nashville working on his latest album. “Like a girl who’s drunk and incredibly desperate.”

He just stands there, still smirking. Like he’s waiting on me to cave.

When I turn back to the railing and scan over the crowd for my friends, I hope he’ll get the hint. But of course he doesn’t.

I take a long sip of my cranberry juice, wishing it had a shot of something strong in it, and suck in a piece of ice.

He moves to stand beside me, abs pressed against the railing. “Full house, huh?” he says.

I ignore him, crunching on the ice.

“Oh my God, look…” a girl says below. “It’s Jared Bryan!” He waves.

She whips out her phone and takes pictures.

I turn my head away, shielding my face with my hand as much as I can. I don’t want to be seen next to Fake Jared on social media.

Girls flood over to the bouncer to try and get up the stairs.

I’m too amused at this point to be irritated. I can’t help but smile smugly at him. “You’re eating this up, aren’t you?” He studies me, almost a little too intensely, his smile widening. God, he’s got a killer smile, and I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t make my lady parts melt. He’s good, I’ll give him that. He’s even wearing Jared’s signature leather jacket.

“I’m not sure how to answer,” he finally says.

“Oh, cut the crap,” I chuckle. “You’re a Jared impersonator looking to get laid.”

He shrugs, looks back over the crowd. “Maybe, maybe not,” he teases.

“Is it safe to look now?” I ask.

“Yeah, she’s stumbled off to the bar. You’re good.”

When I face the crowd again, he says, “Not a drinker?” I look into my cranberry juice, back to him. “Nope. I prefer to be the sober one. It’s more entertaining.”

As if to prove my point, a guy below attempts to break dance and ends up smacking his head on the floor and passing out. “Like so,” I say, gesturing toward the break-dancer wannabe.

Jared leans against the rail with a small laugh. “Where’s your drink?” I ask. “The real Jared Bryan is a partier, you know.”

He gives me an odd look.

“But you have the playboy part down.”

“Playboy?” he repeats.

“Yeah.” I motion to myself. “Like how you’re trying to pick me up at the moment.”

“You think I’m hitting on you, huh? Maybe I’m just being nice to the lonely sober girl.”

I bark a laugh, but part of me scrambles to think back over this short encounter to see if I misread things.

No. That’s what guys like him are so good at – I’m playing hard to get. Or as far as he knows, I don’t want him to get me at all. And he’s playing it off like I might be conceited to save him from feeling rejected. “I’m sober but I’m not lonely. I’m here with my girlfriends.”

“And where are they?” he asks, almost taunts. Like I’m making them up to not seem like a loser. Irritation swells inside, and I scan the dancefloor for them. I’ve only known this guy five minutes and I’m not sure if I want to push him over the railing or take him up on a one night stand. Fake Jared would obviously be game.

Truth be known, I’ve thought of Jared several times over the years when I slept with other guys. This might be as close as I’ll ever get to the real thing. At the very least, though, he distracted me from my heroin craving.

“There,” I say, pointing at them a little too eagerly. Why do I feel like I have something to prove to this guy? The three of them are dancing in a circle while holding their drinks, and apparently, Shea had a wardrobe makeover in the bathroom. She unbuttoned her blouse enough to show some cleavage and has tucked the bottom of it up under her bra. A Hildie creation, I have no doubt. But I can’t deny it looks better than before. Who knew Shea had a killer body?

“The blonde, the redhead, and the strawberry blonde?”

“Yep.”

“Why aren’t you down there with them, then?” I sip my cranberry juice. “Not really my scene.” I say it sharply, hoping he’ll feel the sting of it. This is obviously his scene as well.

“Let me guess,” he says, straightening and rubbing his stubbled jawline. His eyes roam over the tattoos on my arm. Over my little black dress and messy bun. I subtly bend my arms more so he won’t see the injection scars. “Art galleries and poetry readings?” I shake my head, though the poetry part is pretty accurate. Not that I would tell him.

I smile pointedly and throw his previous answer back in his face, “Maybe, maybe not.

” He tosses his head back in laughter, and when he looks back at me, there’s a flash of something in his eyes – familiarity. Respect. Intrigue. I’m throwing his game right back at him and he’s not used to it. And though I can see he likes it, I can also tell he’s not sure if he can crack me. He’s like every other egotistical man – how much should he try with me before he gets too far into rejection territory? Am I worth the risk?
